BATHROOM SAFETY FOR THE ELDERLY

Although many people may associate the bathroom as relaxing since most of us enjoy taking baths, it’s actually a really dangerous place in the house. It’s dangerous for anyone, but more so older people. These are some things to make it safer and easier for everybody.

You may not think the bathroom is risky for anybody, but hundreds of people drown in bathtubs every year. Not to mention all the falls and accidents that can take place and cause serious injury. Seniors are at an even greater risk, this is why taking the time and using precautions in the bathroom is needed, especially because more seniors stay home and maybe even alone. This can help to prevent accidents and injuries and make life a little easier.

KEEPING THE TEMPERATURE LOW

Seniors may not be able to tell when water is too hot, or if the heat in the bathroom is too much. They also have thinner skin than younger people do which makes them more susceptible to burning or hurting themselves. Water that is too hot can cause extreme injury to them.

HAVING A LIGHT ON

Getting up to use the restroom in the middle of the night is very common for older adults. Having a light for them to be able to get to the bathroom easily will help them greatly. Without a light to navigate their way, they could injure themselves by falling or bumping into something.

NO SLIPPERY FLOORS

There are many options when it comes to looking for surfaces that will prevent falling for things such as the bathtub and bathroom flooring. Get rid of surfaces that can make you slip and fall easily which can lead to serious injury. If you don’t want to completely redo your flooring, buy some floor mats or bathtub mats to help prevent slipping.

These are a few good ideas when caring for an elderly loved one. There are other things you can do to prevent accidents in the bathroom such as getting rid of locks and putting dangerous things away. Keep in mind that as the older we get, it’s easier to hurt ourselves.
